Quad City Steamwheelers Defeat the Tennessee Valley Vipers 45-22
June 1, 2007, (Moline, Ill.) – The Quad City Steamwheelers improved to 6-3 on the season after it jumped
out to a 38-7 lead over the Tennessee Valley Vipers (4-5) in front of 3,565 at The MARK of the Quad Cities.
Defensive back Jordan Davis, who appeared in his second game this season, earned ADT Defensive Player of the
Game honors for his efforts in the contest that included a team-high five tackles, one forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an
interception and two pass breakups. With the ‘Wheelers up 7-0 Davis recovered a fumble that setup a one-yard Jeff Macrea
touchdown run, to put Quad City up 14-0. Late in the second half a 31-yard interception return by the defensive back setup
Kris Peters’ second touchdown catch of the game to give the ‘Wheelers a 35-7 lead. Finally, Davis forced a fumble
to open the third quarter, which allowed quarterback J.J. Raterink to find Jack Walker Jr. on a 10-yard pass to give the ‘Wheelers
a 45-7 lead to start the third quarter.
Raterink, who finished the game with 129 yards, five touchdowns and 12 completions, found Peters and Walker
Jr., for two touchdown completions each. Fullback Jeff Macrea and wide receiver Tom Anthony led the team with 30 and 25 rushing
yards respectively. Walker Jr., also finished with two interceptions and earned the U.S. Army Ironman of the Game award.

Steamwheelers defense rollsBy Craig DeVrieze | Saturday, June 02, 2007
| Rate this article | Default | Large
A 45-22 victory over the Tennessee Valley Vipers was the proverbial glass half full for the Quad-City Steamwheelers
Friday night at The Mark of the Quad-Cities.
The Steamwheelers rode a dominant opening half to a 38-7 advantage, but they managed only seven points after
intermission.
The Q-C defense forced five turnovers and stopped the Vipers offense on 10 of their 12 possessions, an
unheard of ratio in the pinball football that is af2.
The offense, though, committed four turnovers and miscues across
the board gave the visiting Vipers countless chances to climb back into the contest after intermission.
“I probably
feel as bad about a win as I have in a long time,’’ said coach Sean Ponder, who coordinates the offense and has
been searching throughout the season for a way to help his club finish games better.
Still, a win it was, and one that
finished a stretch of three straight home games with three straight wins.
You might want to call them the Streakwheelers.
They have won three games to start the season, lost their next three on the road and climbed back into control of the American
Conference’s Midwest Division with a 6-3 record.
“Now we have got to make sure we don’t drop the
next three,” said Ponder, whose club faces two Midwest basement dwellers on the road in successive weeks before returning
home June 22 to face Rich Ingold and his unbeaten Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers.
If the defense plays as well as it
did on Friday in trips to Fort Wayne (Ind.) and Mahoning Valley (Ohio), that June 22 showdown should pit two of the premier
teams in the American Conference.
The Steamwheelers had two fumble recoveries and three interceptions, and repeatedly
pressured the Vipers (4-5) into bad snaps and bad decisions.
“I can’t say enough good things about the
defense,” said Q-C quarterback J.J. Raterink, who completed 12 of 23 throws for 123 yards and four scores overall, but
hit only 3-of-9 for 21 yards and a touchdown after intermission. “The pressure upfront (on the Vipers) was there all
night and, every time I looked, the defensive backs were right on their receivers. Thank you to them. Now, we just fix our
part and go on the road and take care of business.’’
Jack linebacker Jack Walker Jr. had a pair of interceptions
of Vipers quarterback Ryan Porter, who was a woeful 16-for-44 for 205 yards with three picks vs. a pair of touchdowns.
“I
noticed on film that their quarterback likes to throw through the (jack linebacker) box,” said Walker, who also caught
a pair touchdown passes on offense. “I was trying to slow-play it a lot and stay in the back of the box.”
Nose
guard Kika Kaulalaau was responsible for disrupting the Vipers snap exchange and did wondrous work. Vipers coach Milt Theodosatos
lamented at least 30 bungled snaps between Porter and center Calvin Ousby.
“Ten stops is huge — you can’t
ask for anything more,’’ Kaululaau said of the stout Q-C defense. “We’ve got talent. You look at the
defensive backs we’ve got back there and finally we got the pressure upfront that we wanted. I grew up on offense, but
on nights like this I love to be a defensive player.”
The Vipers fumbled the ball away on their first snap and
didn’t stop turning it over the entire first half.
The Steamwheelers picked up a pair of fumbled snaps, picked
off three Porter passes and built that 38-7 lead at intermission.
The Vipers were stopped on downs for the third time
in the game on the first possession of the second half, and the Steamwheelers needed just one play to build a 45-7 advantage.
“Then
what happened, I don’t know,” Ponder said.
First, ex-Quad-City defensive back Troy Graham secured an interception
and nearly took it all the way back to set up a touchdown.
Next, two Steamwheelers failed to secure the kickoff and
Joel Babb fell on it in the end zone to send the game into the final quarter with Q-C’s lead trimmed to 45-20.
Then,
after a fumble, the Vipers offense backpedaled until they faced a fourth-and-41 at the 2. They kicked it away but Kaululaau
was whistled for roughing the kicker, giving the Vipers yet another chance to fight their way back into the game.
“Up
30 or down 30, I’m going for it,” said Kaululaau, who led af2 with six blocked kicks a year ago.
Walker
tipped and intercepted a Porter pass to mitigate the damage there, but the Steamwheelers offense stalled again and Q-C handed
the visitors two points and the ball, snapping it through the end zone on a field goal attempt for a safety with 6 minutes
left.
Tennessee Valley, though, ate 5 minutes of clock before turning it over on downs for the fourth time in the ballgame
and that was that.
“Those are mistakes we can’t make,’’ Ponder said of the sloppy second half.

Steamwheelers travel to Fort Wayne for a 7:30 p.m. start on Friday.
Bell decision this week?
Shonn Bell remains
on team suspension after an intrasquad fight outside the team hotel three weeks ago.
Ponder said he won’t rush
to bring the talented pass-rusher back just because he needs linemen.
Bell has been apologetic for his role and the
coaching staff will meet with team operator Mike Bawden soon to decide Bell’s fate.
“We need to decide
on what is best for the team,’’ said the coach.
Because Bell technically is employed and, thus suspended,
by the league, Bawden said af2 officials will be consulted before a decision is made.
Bawden said Bell is working at
a local youth center and attempting to rectify behavioral issues.
“I think he is sincere in trying to get his
act together so he can play again,’’ Bawden said of the second-year Wheeler and former NFL player. “Whether
he plays here again, I don’t know.’’
Second quarter defense
For a second straight second quarter,
the Steamwheelers held the opposition scoreless Friday.
Travis returns
The Quad-City Steamwheelers have themselves
an avid fan in community hero Travis Hearn.
For the second straight week, Hearn and his family took in the Steamwheelers
game from the second-level party deck.
Steamwheelers players invited Hearn and his family to last week’s game
after helping with the community-wide Habitat for Humanity one-day build of a house for the paralyzed Rock Island football
player.
Good cousin, good copy
Bill Behe, a freelance writer and photographer from Altoona, Pa., was on the
sidelines, snapping pictures earlier this month and said he was gathering material during a Q-C visit for a freelance story
on Steamwheelers assistant coach Ed Flanagan.
Behe is well-versed on the subject. The former Green Bay Packers center
Flanagan also happens to be Behe’s cousin.
“I have done about a dozen stories on him,’’ he
said of the colorful and quotable, four-time Pro Bowler from 1960s era NFL. “He’s got a lot of stories to tell.’’
Carter
stays on shelf
The Bossier/Shreveport BattleWings might activate suspended quarterback Quincy Carter eventually, but
eventually wasn’t this week.
Carter remained suspended ahead of tonight’s game vs. the Texas Copperheads.
Carter missed multiple team film sessions.
The Wings are 1-1 with backup Dane King as starter. If B/S has to turn
to King’s backup for help, he is ready to ride in as a hero. His name is Gary Cooper.
Don’t need a backup
The
Everett Hawks might go into a fourth straight game without a backup quarterback on their roster.
Former starter Ben
Bowling quit after he was supplanted in Game 5 by Jason Campbell.
Campbell has gone the distance since, including in
a loss two weeks ago to the Wheelers at The Mark, but he was forced to play last week’s second half with a minor concussion.
If Campbell were knocked out, Josh Richey, who caught 18 balls at The Mark, would go from receiver to reliever.
