Quad City Steamwheelers Remain in First Place in the Midwest Division with a 61-33 Victory Over the Green Bay
Blizzard
June 29, 2007, (Moline, Ill.) – The Quad City Steamwheelers (8-5) remained in first place in the American
Conference Midwest Division thanks to a 61-33 victory over the Green Bay Blizzard (6-6) in front of 4,316 at The MARK of the
Quad Cities. The Steamwheelers used a 27-point fourth quarter and nine touchdown night by quarterback J.J. Raterink to defeat
the Blizzard.
With the ‘Wheelers leading 27-20 at the half, the Blizzard started the third quarter with a seven
play 45-yard drive that culminated with a two-yard Antonio Ficklin run. The Blizzard elected to go for a two-point conversion
and failed leaving Quad City in the lead, 27-26. Wide Receiver Jack Walker Jr., caught his second of four touchdown
passes for the ‘Wheelers to extend the lead to 34-26 with just 2:37 remaining in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter turned into the Walker Jr., show as he tallied two touchdown receptions, forced two fumbles
and recovered two fumbles. He opened the quarter with a 26-yard touchdown reception with 11:02 remaining. With the Steamwheelers
leading 47-33 and seven minutes remaining in the game Walker Jr., registered a sack on Blizzard quarterback Gino Guidugli
forcing a fumble that he recovered. One play later he caught a 19-yard pass from Raterink extending the ‘Wheelers lead
to 54-33. Walker Jr., sealed the game for Quad City with 27 seconds remaining after forcing and recovering his second fumble
on the evening.
The Steamwheelers opened the first frame with Kris Peters registering the first two touchdowns of the night
to put Quad City up, 14-0. The Blizzard cut the lead to seven with just 43 seconds remaining in the quarter when Guidugli,
who finished the game with 276 yards and four touchdowns on 18 completions, hit Ficklin on a 29-yard pass. The two teams traded
touchdowns in the second quarter with Walker Jr., and Tom Anthony trading strikes with Nathan Hardwick and Kellen Allen for
the Blizzard.
For the ‘Wheelers the team finished with 300 total offensive yards, while Walker Jr., went over the
1,000 yard and 100 catch plateau with 12 catches for 106 yards and four touchdowns. He is the second ‘Wheelers this
year to tally 1,000+ receiving yards. Anthony finished with 10 catches for 81 yards and one touchdown, while Peters
tallied nine catches for 98 yards and four touchdowns. On defense Lavar Stepter led the way with 8.5 total tackles and two
pass breakups, while Shonn Bell finished with three tackle, two tackles for a loss and three pass breakups.
Hardwick finished with a game-high 120 yards while tallying seven catches and two touchdowns. Teammates

Steamwheelers send message with some throttleBy Don Doxsie | Saturday, June 30, 2007

The Quad-City Steamwheelers didn’t just win a big game against a tough rival Friday night.
They sent a message to the rest of arenafootball2’s American Conference: The post-season already has
begun.
The Steamwheelers riddled what was supposed to be the top-rated defense in af2, scoring on every possession
and pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 61-33 victory over the Green Bay Blizzard in front of a crowd of 4,316 at The
Mark of the Quad-Cities.
Green Bay, which was ranked No. 1 in af2 in total defense, held the Wheelers to only two touchdowns
in a 44-14 victory back on April 27, but was relatively helpless against J.J. Raterink and friends Friday.
Raterink
tossed a career-high nine touchdown passes, including four each to Jack Walker Jr. and Kris Peters. The third member of the
Wheelers’ dynamic receiving trio, Tom Anthony, matched a career high with 10 receptions.
“We had this thing
Sunday, and we were talking about things and Coach (Troy) Biladeau said as nice as it would have been to win that game last
week (against unbeaten Scranton/Wilkes-Barre), we have to win the Green Bay game,” Raterink said.“This was definitely
a must win. They got us once and we absolutely had to have this one.”
Biladeau, who is filling in on an interim
basis while Sean Ponder serves a three-game suspension, said: “I pretty much told them the playoffs start right now.
“I
said these next two games are divisional games against good teams and we need to win them,’’ he said. “If
you’re going to make any noise in the playoffs, you need to be at home. We need to get up to the second or third seed
and that’s why these were such important games.’’
The victory put the Wheelers (8-5) in control in
the American Conference Midwest Division. Green Bay is a 1½ games back at 6-6 and Louisville, the next opponent, is 6-5. The
Wheelers travel to play the Fire on July 14 after a bye week.
With the last two games of the season at home against
teams near the bottom of the American Conference playoff race, the Wheelers are virtually assured of one of the conference’s
eight post-season berths.
The Wheelers never trailed in Friday’s game, bolting to an early 14-0 advantage. Green
Bay got back to within 27-26 on the opening possession of the second half, but Walker led a charge that turned the game into
a rout in the fourth quarter.
Despite suffering a shoulder injury early in the second quarter, the 6-foot-4, 195-pound
veteran wrestled the ball away from a Green Bay defender on a 26-yard touchdown reception that made it 40-26 early in the
fourth period.
After the two teams traded touchdowns, he recovered a fumbled snap by Blizzard quarterback Gino Guidugli,
then grabbed a 19-yard TD pass from Raterink on the next play, putting the game out of reach at 54-33.
“You never
want to run up the score but sometimes the situation dictates things,’’ Raterink said. “We needed to run
the clock and they were giving us some things deep after awhile.”
Peters added one more score, on a 6-yard scoring
pass, with 52 seconds to go and Walker recovered one more fumble on the next play.
“It was a hard-fought game
until the fourth quarter,’’ Peters said. “The fourth quarter is when good teams need to finish. This was
a playoff type game so we had to finish and we did.”
Green Bay had only allowed more than 43 points in a game
once this season and that was way back on April 21.
But Biladeau said he knew the Blizzard could be had with short
passes to negate what has been a ferocious pass rush.
“Their defensive line is so good that we knew we had to
do that to keep them from taking over,” he said.
