FORT WAYNE, Ind. — So much for the Quad-City Steamwheelers not being able to finish strong.
And so much for the Wheelers not being able to overcome adversity on the road.
Trailing by six late
in the third quarter, the Steamwheelers outscored the Fort Wayne Fusion 30-7 down the stretch and pulled out of Indiana with
their fourth straight victory Friday night.
The 64-47 win upped the Steamwheelers’ record to 7-4 and kept them
in control of arenafootball2’s American Conference Midwest Division.
“That’s a big one for us,”
said coach Sean Ponder, whose club hits the road again for Mahoning Valley (Ohio) next week. “It’s nice to win
four in a row. … We overcame a lot of stuff.”
The fast close was fed by a defense that forced four Fort
Wayne turnovers, three of which led to points in the course of a 23-0 Q-C run over the closing minutes of the third and the
early portions of the final quarter.
Those included a touchdown-producing interception return by fill-in defensive
back Lavar Stepter early in the fourth to put the Wheelers up 47-40.
Seconds later, Nik Kerr recovered a fumbled kickoff
to set up a 21-yard Connor McCormick field goal. Then, a few minutes after that, Jermaine Petty fell on a fumble recovery
in the end zone to create a 57-40 Q-C lead.
The big finish was something the Steamwheelers were seeking after starting
a host of recent games fast and then struggling a bit in the second half.
“That’s the first time we have
played a second half in three or four games — it was good effort for us,” Ponder said. “It was a game where
we had to play the second half and the guys stepped up and played as well as they could.”
Stepter, an unsung
backup at receiver and defensive back, played especially well, earning a rare game ball after ably filling in when close friend
and fellow cornerback Sidney Lewis was ejected after a second-quarter skirmish.
“I told him ‘I got you,’
” Stepter said of his halftime chat with Lewis. “Me and him are from the same (west suburban Chicago) neighborhood.
We were just putting another goon in.”
In addition to his game-turning interception, Stepter contributed three
solo tackles and three assists while also returning seven kicks for 110 yards.
“I don’t usually give game
balls, but I don’t think anyone in the locker room disagreed,” Ponder said. “He was flying to the ball,
making special teams tackles, causing disruptions all over the field.”
The road win was especially sweet for
a Q-C club that had lost three straight on the road a month ago, and it sweeter still given the adversity the Wheelers faced
in Fort Wayne. Troubles included Lewis’ ejection and a second-quarter Fusion interception return for a touchdown that
Ponder and several other observers thought skipped off the ground.
Another scary moment came when quarterback J.J.
Raterink went to the locker room with a sore shoulder after a late hit in the third.
In his place, backup QB Matt Pike,
playing near his old hometown, finished a 3-yard sneak to put the Wheelers on top 41-40 heading to the final quarter.
And
then the visitors broke the game open.
Raterink returned to start the fourth and finished with 303 yards passing and
five touchdowns, completing 25 of 34 throws. Jack Walker Jr. had 12 catches for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Kris Peters
had five catches for 90 yards and two scores.
