Fans planning on attending the Friday, June 22 game against the currently unbeaten Wilkes Barre/Scranton Pioneers should note that the game time has been changed. The game has been moved to a 6:30 p.m. start.

Quad City Steamwheelers Drop First Home Game of the Season, 62-55, to Undefeated Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

June 22, 2007, (Moline, Ill.) – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers remain undefeated in the arenafootball2 league after defeating the Quad City Steamwheelers, 62-55, in front of 4,120 at The MARK of the Quad Cities on Friday night. With three seconds remaining in the game quarterback Ryan Vena hit Buchie Ibeh on a nine-yard pass to seal the victory.

With the Steamwheelers trailing 41-40 to start the fourth quarter, the Quad City defense appeared to force a turnover on downs when Vena’s pass to Larry Kendrick soared over his head, however, Malik Jackson was called for illegal defense giving the Pioneers a fresh set of downs. On the next play, Vena hit Jim Jones for a 21-yard pass and a 48-40 led.

The Steamwheelers tied the game after a three-play 39 yard drive culminated with a Tom Anthony five-yard run and a two-point conversion catch by Jack Walker Jr with 9:17 remaining.

A 36-yard pass by Vena, who was named the Schutt Offensive Player of  Game for his 342 yards and nine touchdown passes, to Marcus Furman put the Pioneers back on top 55-48 with just 6:53 remaining in the contest.

The ‘Wheelers ate 5:19 off the clock on their next drive that concluded with a 13-yard pass to Kris Peters to tie the game at 55 apiece.

With 1:13 remaining in the contest the Pioneers orchestrated a perfect drive that concluded with a nine-yard pass to Ibeh with only three seconds remaining in the contest to hand Quad City its first loss at home thiseason.

The Steamwheelers opened the game with a five-yard Raterink to Peters touchdown pass and the fake extra point attempt failed just shy of the goal line, giving Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the chance to take the lead on the next possession, which they did. The first quarter ended with the Steamwheelers up 12-7 and after surrendering two touchdowns on the first two possessions of the second quarter ‘Wheelers closed the gap to one point, 27-26 at the half.

Raterink finished the game with 258 passing yards and five touchdowns on 26 completions. Peters led the receiving corps with nine catches for 129 yards and three touchdowns, while Jack Walker Jr., finished with seven catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns. On defense Kevin Adams finished with a game-high 12 total tackles and two breakups.

For the Pioneers, Jim Jones finished with 10 catches for 133 yards and four touchdowns, while Ibeh had 11 catches for 94 yards and three TD’s. Chris Royal led the defense with 10 total tackles, while former ‘Wheeler DeOnte Taylor finished with 6.5 tackles.

Quad City (7-5) remains at home next weekend when they face division rival the Green Bay Blizzard on Friday, June 29. It is Hero’s Night and all military, police, fire, EMT’s and their families can get a special $6.00 ticket with a valid ID. Wheelers come up short

By Craig DeVrieze | Saturday, June 23, 2007

Still a master of postgame bluster, Rich Ingold likened his unbeaten Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers to a takes-on-all-comers heavyweight champion in the wake of 62-55 last-second win over his old crew, the Quad-City Steamwheelers, on Friday night at The Mark of the Quad-Cities.

“Here’s the deal,’’ he said after his Pioneers scored the game-winning touchdown with 3 seconds on the clock. “We’re 11-0, and the last three weeks every game has come down to the last minute. We are going to get everybody’s best shot. Quad-Cities played their best.’’

After a week of turmoil that included a three-game suspension for first-year head coach Sean Ponder, the Steamwheelers (7-5) did indeed give Ingold’s                 league-leaders a heavyweight tussle.

Although the defense failed to register a stop in nine Pioneer possessions, the club did rally behind interim head coach Troy Biladeau, tying the game at 55-55 with 1:13 left on the third touchdown connection of the night between standout receiver Kris Peters and quarterback J.J.Raterink.

But veteran Pioneer quarterback Ryan Vena (29-for-42 for 342 yards) completed the night with his ninth touchdown throw of the contest, a 9-yard fade pass to Buchie Ibeh, to help his Pioneers escape with 3 seconds left.

“Before that series, he told me: ‘Coach, we’re not giving them the ball again,’’’ Ingold said of an expertly managed four-play, 45-yard drive.

The Steamwheelers tried a little razzle dazzle on the ensuing kickoff but might have needed the help of the Stanford band to score. Return man Peters was tackled at the Q-C 15 as time expired, and the Steamwheelers fell for the first time in five home games this year.

“It would have been a fantastic story,’’ Raterink said of pulling out a victory over the perfect Pioneers after the week his team endured. “A lot of us thought that, and we were thinking that at the end. I couldn’t be prouder of the guys.’’

Raterink (26-for-35 for 258 yards and five touchdowns) finished a solid game by leading his offense to touchdowns on eight of its nine possessions, but they were stopped on downs midway through the second quarter, and that turned out to be the difference.

That, and three crucial flags against the Q-C defense.

Twice near the end of the second quarter, penalties negated Q-C turnovers. First, Jermaine Petty was called for being offside after the Pioneers had coughed up a fumble. Then, Kika Kaululaau drew a personal foul flag for hitting Vena below the knees, erasing a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown by Kevin Adams Jr. (In reality, though, Vena likely wouldn’t have tossed the weak-armed interception if Kaululaau hadn’t applied the pressure.)

The most costly penalty of the night might have come midway through the final frame when jack linebacker Malik Jackson was called for illegal defense on a fourth-down incompletion by Vena. On that play, even Ingold conceded the officiating crew missed his club having two receivers in motion before that crucial snap.

Still, he insisted the Steamwheelers were not flagged for what he thought was pass interference on a couple of earlier plays.

“We definitely got away with something,’’ he said, “but it all washes out in the end.’’

Kaululaau isn’t sure the on-field laundry is evening out. He said he saw with his own two eyes what the refs failed to see on the critical fourth-down play.

“I saw two guys in high motion — I’m looking at both of them while the ref is looking at me,’’ he said. “I just want to know what they are watching.’’

Despite the missed opportunity to unseat the American Conference leaders, the Steamwheelers will try and keep their eye on the prize that still is within their grasp. They continue to lead the conference’s Midwest Division and will play the two teams chasing them in succeeding weeks, Green Bay at home next week and Louisville on the road on July 14.

“As long as we can win the division — and that’s the goal right now — we will be the No. 2 or 3 seed in the playoffs,’’ said Biladeau. “This was a playoff atmosphere tonight and the guys responded. We hung in their with a championship team to the very end. I am proud of these guys. It’s tough, but we can learn from this.’’

Biladeau was particularly proud of an offense helmed by receivers coach Shon King as normal offensive coordinator Ponder watched from an end zone suite.

“The offense looked very good, and coach King stepped up,’’ he said. “J.J. stepped up and the receivers looked like they were all on the same page.’’

A crowd of 4,120, the largest at The Mark since the home opener, saw the thrilling contest.

The Steamwheelers host Green Bay at 7:30 p.m. Friday at The Mark of the Quad-Cities.

Ponder quietly watches

Suspended Steamwheelers head coach Sean Ponder took in the game from an end-zone suite but politely declined comment when approached by a reporter.

Ponder indicated he did not want to do anything to violate the parameters of the three-game suspension handed down by af2 president Jerry Kurz after he tripped Mahonng Valley defensive back and former Steamwheeler Reggie Perkins a week ago.

Ponder wasn’t the only Steamwheeler MIA. Starting fullback-linebacker Jeff Macrea sat out the game, resting an ailing knee.

That necessitated a series of lineup changes that put Nikolas Kerr in at fullback, saw nose guard Kika Kaululaau shift to linebacker and defensive end Mark Cristiani move to nose. Meanwhile, Trevor Misipeka returned at center, and Andy Endemann shifted to guard.

Ingold: Feels like home

The welcoming committee for former Q-C coach Rich Ingold was smaller than a year ago, although former assistants Ed Langford and Jon Roehlk grabbed seats behind the Pioneers bench. Ingold also did a lot of handshaking with Q-C fans before kickoff.

“It feels great,’’ Ingold said of his return. “It’s like going home again.’’

Ingold looked a bit lighter after his bout with throat surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and wore a large scar on his neck. But he was in good spirits after enjoying his first solid food in months during a team luncheon at Pat McGuire’s in Davenport.

He visited with some friends Thursday night and was surprised to see some new structures erected around town.

“It’s booming around here,’’ he said. “It’s good to be back. These were three of the best years of my life.’’

Roelhk keeps on truckin’

Engaged and providing for a toddler, former assistant coach Roehlk is out of football and driving a truck for Priority Express.

Roelhk, the Wheelers line coach from 2002 through last season, said he was not asked to return this season but likely would have.

Now, though, he has his Fridays and Saturdays off and is spending quality time with his son, Michael, and his fiancé Shelly Silvan. The two will be married Nov. 24. Ingold will be back for the occasion.

Heroes’ night slated

Members of the military, police officers, firemen, emergency medical technicians and their families will be honored at the Green Bay game, with tickets for them just $6.

The Steamwheelers will wear one-time only jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. Proceeds will go to the Q-C chapter of Families In Support of Troops.
