SteamWheelers snuff out the Burn..  65-38

BOISE BURN

Quad City Steamwheelers Roll Over Boise Burn 65-38 in Home Opener

April 13, 2007, (Spokane, Wash.) – The Quad City Steamwheelers improved to 3-0 on the season after a convincing 65-38 victory over the Boise Burn in front of 5,673 fans at The MARK of the Quad Cities.
The Steamwheelers jumped on the board first for the third game in a row when wide receiver Kris Peters hauled in a 29-yard pass from quarterback J.J. Raterink on a two play 29-yard drive.  After a Boise touchdown to tie the game Raterink found Jesse Schmidt on a 12-yard play to end the first quarter before he hooked up with Thomas Anthony on a 14-yard play to start the second quarter giving the ‘Wheelers a 21-7 lead.
After taking a 28-14 lead into the half Jermaine Petty took over for the Steamwheelers. Petty, the U.S. Army Ironman and Olympic Steel Man of  the Game, recorded two rushing touchdowns and a safety in the second half to seal the victory for Quad City.
Offensively, Raterink threw for 175 yards and four touchdowns on 17 completions, while backup Matt Pike had 32 yards and a touchdown toss on four completions. Jermaine Petty rushed for two touchdowns for the third game in a row, while netting 17 rushing yards. Wide Receiver Jesse Schmidt led the team in receiving touchdowns with two, while fellow teammate Tom Anthony had a team leading 56 receiving yards.
Defensively, Shonn Bell led the team with six tackles and a fumble recovery, while Kevin Adams recorded two picks. Wide Receiver and linebacker Jack Walker Jr., also returned an 18-yard pick for a touchdown.
For the Burn, quarterback Bart Hendricks tallied a 162 yards and two touchdowns on 14 completions. His backup Dan Beardall finished with 43 yards and two touchdowns on three completions. Wide Receiver Casey Allen led both teams in receiving yards with 120 on nine completions. He also threw for three touchdowns.
On defense, Sullivan Beard finished the game with a game-high nine total tackles, while Tyler Bruhn had the lone Boise pick.

Steamwheelers win home opener despite struggles, injuries

Near the end of Friday night’s 65-38 win against the Boise Burn, a fan patted Quad-City Steamwheelers quarterback J.J. Raterink on the shoulder and told him he had played a good game.

Raterink shrugged, almost half-heartedly.

“It’s a win,” he said.

That’s all one really could say about the Steamwheelers’ home-opening victory, which came in front of 5,673 fans at The Mark of the Quad-Cities.

“We really kind of played at their level,” said Wheelers safety Kevin Adams, who was named the defensive player of the game after intercepting two passes and breaking up two others.

“I don’t know what was wrong with us, but we weren’t playing to our potential. If we played a better team, we wouldn’t have come out with that outcome.”

The outcome, the Steamwheelers’ third consecutive win to start the season, seemed ordinary, almost expected, which is a good sign for a team trying to bounce back from its first losing season. It also is promising for first-year coach Sean Ponder, who has the team off to its best start since 2004.

And the 5,673 in attendance — almost a thousand more than the best turnout last season — is encouraging for new managing owner Mike Bawden, who last fall took over a franchise hanging on the brink of extinction.

“They got to see a little of what we’ve been doing on the road, although I have to promise them it will be better next time we come out here,” said Raterink, who completed 17 of 28 passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns to earn offensive player of the game honors.

So Friday’s game was just as Raterink put it — a win, all around. But it came at a price.

Jesse Schmidt, who had a pair of receiving touchdowns, suffered a knee injury while covering a kickoff late in the fourth quarter. He was on crutches after the game with the knee heavily wrapped, and his status is uncertain for next week’s game at Oklahoma City.

Shonn Bell and Jermaine Petty also went down on that play but later returned to the field. Lineman Chris Jahnke tweaked an ankle, and Kika Kaululaau twisted a knee. On top of that, tight end Andy Endemann was ejected for throwing a punch midway through the third quarter and might be suspended for next week’s game.

“That’s going to be left up the commissioner,” Ponder said. “I’ll probably get a report from the league after they review the tape. Whatever they decide, that’s what we’ll do.”

The Steamwheelers never trailed, taking a 7-0 lead on a 29-yard strike from Raterink to Kris Peters less than 5 minutes in. Boise (1-1) responded with a score, but Raterink struck again, finding Schmidt in the corner of the end zone to give Q-C the lead for good with 1 minute, 55 seconds left in the first quarter.

Raterink hooked up with Thomas Anthony and again found Schmidt in the second as the Steamwheelers took a 28-14 lead into the locker room.

The Burn cut the lead to 28-20 early in the third quarter, but the Steamwheelers pulled out to a 42-20 advantage after scoring runs from Petty and Jeff Macrea. Petty, the iron man of the game, later recorded a safety from his linebacker position and another rushing score that made it 51-26 with 9:38 left in the game.

If there was any doubt after Boise pulled within 51-32, Jack Walker Jr. erased it with an 18-yard interception return for a score to seal the win.

“It’s an emotional win,” Ponder said. “Starting off 3-0, we’re in a great situation.”

Better late than never

The Boise Burn had a tough time getting to the Quad-Cities for Friday night’s game against the Steamwheelers.

The Burn originally were to fly out of Denver, but they couldn’t make the drive south from Boise because of snowy weather. As late as Thursday night, Wheelers managing owner Mike Bawden didn’t know if the Burn would be able to make it to the Quad-Cities. They ended up catching a flight from Boise to Chicago on Friday morning and then connecting on a flight to Moline. They got to the Quad-Cities at about 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Maybe that’s why, when the public-address announcer went to introduce the Boise players, they were nowhere to be found.

The announcer continued on to the Steamwheelers, and the Burn never were introduced to the crowd.

Punch out

Steamwheelers tight end Andy Endemann was ejected from midway through the third quarter.

Endemann and the Burn’s Jason  Murray got into a scuffle at midfield after a J.J. Raterink incomplete pass. Endemann pinned Murray on the af2 logo at the    25-yard line and punched him in the face mask. Endemann was assessed a personal foul and ejected. The game grew increasingly chippy after the incident.

And she’s OK

Midway through the second quarter, Q-C wide receiver Jesse Schmidt was pushed out of the back of the end zone while attempting to make a catch. He went crashing into a cameraman, who went tumbling into a Steamwheelers cheerleader.

The cheerleader, Tana Trapp, fell to the ground and twisted her ankle.

“I tried to move out of the way, and I ended up moving into it,” Trapp said. “It’s not broken. It’s just really sore.”

Trapp, 24, is a grad school student at St. Ambrose.

Mr. Perfection

Q-C receivers coach Shon King remains unbeaten as a Steamwheeler. As a receiver in 2000, he was known as “Mr. Saturday Night,” during the Wheelers 19-0 championship season. With the team off to a 3-0 start this year, he is 22-0. He added another win as coach of the Deck Mates — the Q-C cheerleaders — in their powder puff game against the Davenport Hooters Girls last month.

Mini Wheelin’

The Moline Parks and Recreation Mini-Wheelers players led the Steamwheelers on the field Friday night and were introduced at halftime. The Mini-Wheelers, a youth group that plays arena-style flag football, will take the field at The Mark again at 8 a.m. today to play their league championship games.
