Louisville Fire
’Wheelers flame out against division rival Comment on this story
By Steve Tappa, stappa@qconline.com
The Quad City Steamwheelers somehow salvaged the perfect game-ending situation from a mistake-filled performance Saturday
night in Louisville.
"Down 6 points, with the ball, 50 seconds left and all of your timeouts," QC interim coach Troy Biladeau said by cell phone.
"In arena football, you couldn't ask for more. All we had to do was score and kick the extra point, and we win the game."
Instead, the 'Wheelers failed to get a first down, then the Fire also burned QC with a final-play touchdown to claim a
head-to-head playoff tiebreaker, in a 54-42 decision at Louisville's Freedom Hall.
The setback dropped the 'Wheelers (8-6) into a three-way tie for the Midwest Division with Louisville and Green Bay, a
77-40 winner Saturday over Cincinnati.
Both Louisville and Green Bay own a head-to-head point-differential tiebreaker with QC heading into the final two games
of the regular-season.
Louisville and Green Bay do play next week. QC finishes with division basement-dweller Cincinnati (Friday) and Fort Wayne
(July 26).
"It's a heartbreaker because now we don't fully control our own destiny," Biladeau said after a see-saw contest featuring
eight lead changes.
"Our last two games are at home, but now just winning isn't enough. We have to do a little scoreboard watching, too. We're
in a dogfight now."
The fact the 'Wheelers were in position to lament a tight loss was a miracle to begin with.
QC committed four turnovers, and Louisville also scored a safety when 'Wheelers quarterback J.J. Raterink was sacked in
the end zone.
"We played well defensively," Biladeau said. "We made some big plays to keep us alive."
After the sack, QC trailed 35-27 heading into the final period.
The deficit increased to 48-35 after QC's Kris Peters dropped a wide-open touchdown pass and Raterink fumbled away the
next snap.
"That would have definitely been a huge play for us," Biladeau said about one of the few balls Peters didn't catch in a
12-reception, 175-yard, 2-TD night.
Louisville scored on the resulting possession, after an interception by Kevin Adams was waived off because rookie jack
linebacker Malik Jackson was ruled out of the box.
However, the 'Wheelers answered back with Jack Walker Jr. hauling in a 6-yard Raterink TD pass off the catch net with 1:33
remaining.
Louisville recovered the on-side kick, but QC's defense stiffened one last time, forcing a 22-yard field-goal try, which
Dave Hendrix missed wide left.
"Then we just didn't execute," said Biladeau, QC's defensive coordinator, who filled in for Sean Ponder during a 3-game
league suspension for tripping an opposing player. "This is not the way I wanted (my head-coaching reign) to end. But the
team needed the `W' more than I did."
Raterink finished 28-for-41 for 289 yards, 3 TDs and 3 interceptions. All four turnovers were charged to Raterink.
"It wasn't his best game," Biladeau said. "But, like I told him afterward, we win as a team, and we lose as a team. We're
not going to do any finger-pointing around here."
Walker added 12 grabs for 82 yards to Peters' effort.
NFL veteran defensive ends Jermaine Petty and Shonn Bell led QC's defense. Petty had two sacks, forced a fumble and blocked
a field goal. Bell had a tackle for loss, plus a fumble recovery.
"It was a great game," Biladeau said. "We'd make a big play, then they'd make a big play. They just made one more than
we did."
