Cincinnati Jungle Kats
Welcome back: Blowout win helps Steamwheelers return to playoffsBy Craig DeVrieze | Saturday, July 21, 2007

Mothers tell their sons not to hit, but football mothers do make exceptions.
Watching her son, Jermaine Petty, play football for the first time in two years, Joyce Norris saw him deliver one of the
most crushing blows in Quad-City Steamwheelers’ memory.
“I said, ‘Oh my God,’ ” Norris
said of her reaction to her son’s game-turning, bone-crunching early-second-half sack of Cincinnati Jungle Kats quarterback
Scott Jefferies.
Coming clean on a rush after Jefferies had been flushed out of the pocket, Petty knocked the football
out of the quarterback’s hands, knocked the quarterback out of the game and turned what had been a typical arenafootball2
offensive shootout into an easy-does-it, 83-33 Steamwheelers rout.
The win booked the Steamwheelers (9-6) a certain
af2 playoff berth.
Now, to win the Midwest Division and ensure a first-round playoff home game, they have to beat Fort
Wayne on Thursday at the i wireless Center and hope for a Saturday loss at Mahoning Valley by Green Bay.
Green Bay
beat Louisville 74-48 on Friday, and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Steamwheelers.
The Steamwheelers also
might claim a home game with a win and a couple of helpful results elsewhere, but Petty isn’t into all that playoff
math.
His goal is just to keep knocking down opponents and see what happens.
“I’m not big on clinching,”
he said of Friday’s achievement. “I’m big on winning out and going into the playoffs with a full head of
steam.”
A full head of steam is what the Q-C defensive end had worked up when the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Jefferies
— who had kept the 1-14 Kats in the contest by throwing for five first-half touchdowns — rolled left in his own
end zone and turned upfield on the second half’s fourth play.
“He decided to try and put a move
on me,” said Petty, who was coming unblocked.
It didn’t work.
“I felt it,” fellow Steamwheelers
lineman Kika Kaululaau said of the jarring sack that sent Jefferies to a local hospital for precautionary x-rays. “I
thought I was going to fall down. It stunned my vision.”
Kaululaau recovered in time to recover Jefferies fumble
at the 1, and when quarterback J.J. Raterink snuck it in on the next play, the rout was good and on.
With Jeffries
in, the teams traded first-half scores until Kris Peters’ 49-yard missed field goal return inside the final minute helped
Q-C stake a 43-33 lead at halftime.
A Cincinnati representative spoke to Jefferies as he waited to be x-rayed at Trinity
Trauma Center after the game and said the quarterback was expected to be OK.
Cincinnati wasn’t fine without him.
With backup Patrick Josten behind center, the Jungle Kats never sniffed the end zone again.
The Steamwheelers offense,
meanwhile, kept rolling, finishing with scores on all 10 of its possessions.
Raterink completed 21 of 28 throws for
224 yards and eight touchdowns, while Peters had four touchdown receptions in addition to his big return, and Jack Walker
Jr. had three TD catches as well as an interception return for a score.
Pleasant Valley High grad Tom Anthony joined
Peters and Walker in the elite 100-catch, 1,000-yard single-season club with a 10-catch, 104-yard, one touchdown night.
“Our
offense was clicking in the first and second half and the defense came out and terrorized them in the second half,”
Anthony said.
Kevin Adams Jr. contributed a game-high eight tackles to go with a highlight-film-caliber interception
and a pass break-up. And Walker had a fumble recovery in addition to his pick and score.
The undoubted defensive star,
though, was big hitter Petty had three sacks and forced both fumbles after coming out of the pregame tunnel and finding his
mother and father had traveled all the way from Inman, S.C., to see him play indoors for the first time.
“Mom
and Dad surprised me,” he said. “I had to really step my game up.”
That he did.
Former quarterback
Sean Ponder, back as Q-C head coach after a three-game league suspension, said he never has been hit as hard as Petty hit
Jefferies.
“And I had some bad offensive lines,” he said.
